I bought this book in November. When it arrived I put into a pile and said, "I'll read it later" and then I didn't. What I did do is move it around. It is a heavy book, so I put it aside. Sometimes the universe has a way of telling you..."now is not the time" or "now is the time. Two weeks ago I drove down the wrong side of the street, fleeting like I was running in slow motion....I needed to slow down. I needed to get off the hamster wheel. There were lessons I still hadn't learned. So I stopped and for 10 days I took stock of my life. Somehow on the table sat "Sing To Me of Dreams". I picked this book up and for 5 days...I was immersed into an extraordinary story of love, forgiveness, of understanding human fragility and trusting. I have read all of Kathryn Lynn Davis's books each have moved me deeply; strangely this book came into my life when I least expected it and needed it the most. Jamie and Edward are strong male characters, while Theron is the child we all were once long ago, but he is an old soul. Yet Julian and Saylah are the characters that will resonate with readers. Juilan the tortured grieving son of Julian and Saylah known formerly as Tanu who must decide which world she belongs to and has to free herself from one. The breathtaking poetry where it be Native American, Scottish Highlanders verse or Keats vibrates to your soul. You take a breath and you absorb. For me I was in the forest, I was on the beach, I light the candles, I smelled the death root I felt the chill of the cold water. So the universe told me ...go slowly, become the story, become the characters take your time. So, I read, I reread, I slowed down. Now I don't fear dreams I cherish them as I value this book. It is timeless, it touches your heart but more importantly it looks into your soul.Tags : Sing to Me of Dreams [Kathryn Lynn Davis] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is one of the best books that I have read in years. Once started it was very hard to put down. Kathryn kept the story going from page one until the very end.
Excellent read, hard to put down even for sleep!
I loved this book. At each stage I could sense what the main character was going through. It made me laugh and cry, and (cry for most of the last stage), until the finale. It shows the loss of childhood interwoven with a native American background in the 1800s. It stopped being about the history early on and became a story about growing up and the different stages that life can take. It's a heartwarming book that shows a different side of life, not about forgetting, but about moving forward.
This book is beautifully written and leads you into a fully developed world. The characters are real and believable. It is an altogether wonderful book.
Very different book, in some respects, than I have read before. Growing up among the Osage Indians, I heard many stories and this book will keep your attention.
This is a very interesting and different story. Tanu is half American and half Salish Indian. She lived with the Salish until she was 15 and then went to live with the Canadians. The beliefs and rituals of the Salish were intriguing. The author makes you feel as though you’re with the characters. Saylah’s help with the Ivys and heir intrigue with her was heartwarming. Her friendship-romance with Julian was touching and sweet. I would have given this five stars except for the length (11-12 hours).
If you like spiritual references in abundance, you will enjoy this book. The spirituality of a Native Indian people - including a shaman, a queen, earth elements such as wind, trees, soil, water, and sun are often interwoven in the tale of a green-eyed female of mixed blood who, through no fault of her own, finds herself not belonging in either life. She of special gifts can never do wrong. When she discovers her gifts cannot solve all problems of her people, she leaves them to seek answers. Her self-doubt leads her to prevents all others from becoming close. Whether it was the author's intent, the heroine of this tale seems to become somewhat unhinged in her insecurities. Her dreams, references to nature, and frequent references to days spent with "her people" led this reader to become impatient for the next phase to occur. I did not feel that the story was well-paced, for it seemed to wax forever on the remembrance of what once was. Even so, some others may enjoy this tale and style of writing.
